Kazakhstan expects Russia to extradite ex-Statistics Agency head
ASTANA. April 24 (Interfax) - Russia has not yet made a decision on whether to extradite former head of the Kazakh State Statistics Agency Anar Meshimbayeva to Kazakhstan, says Kazakh First Deputy Prosecutor General Johan Merkel.
"It is difficult to say when [Meshimbayeva may be extradited] and when Russian competent agencies may make a decision on this," Merkel told journalists on the sidelines of a parliamentary session on Wednesday.
Meshimbayeva was detained in Moscow in early February.
Meshimbayeva and her former deputies Nurman Bayanov and Birlik Mendybayev are suspected of embezzlement of budget funds during a national census in February-March 2009.
Meshimbayeva was charged in absentia of embezzling budget funds. She was put on the international wanted list in November 2009.
Kazakhstan was earlier seeking Meshimbayeva's extradition from the United Arab Emirates for a long time.
