Syrian govt forces making success in fighting insurgents - minister

MOSCOW. April 27 (Interfax) - The Syrian government forces are successfully fighting insurgents, and this success has brought about "radical and qualitative changes" in the situation, Syrian Information Minister Umran Ahid al-Za'bi said at a meeting with Russian Federation Council Deputy Chairman Ilyas Umakhanov.

"The American hysteria" in the past two days should be attributed precisely to success the government forces are making, al-Za'bi said." All this hysteria and allegations that the government forces in Syria have used chemical weapons should be attributed precisely to the fact that the government forces are successfully fighting the militants," he said.

Umakhanov noted that Russia's position remains unchanged. "It is the Syrian people themselves who are entitled to resolve their problems, including settle the conflict, without interference from the outside," he said.

"It is possible to achieve a compromise and stop bloodshed only at the negotiating table, and we firmly share this position," he said.
