Gunman killed after firing at FSB officers in Kabardino-Balkaria

NALCHIK/MOSCOW. April 30 (Interfax) - An unknown man was killed in a shootout with Federal Security Service (FSB) officers who stopped his car for a security check in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria on Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee's local branch told Interfax.

"As FSB officers tried to stop a VAZ 21099 car on a road between the villages of Khasanya and Gerpegezh at around 6:30 a.m., they came under fire from a man armed with an automatic weapon. The officers fired back, killing the attacker, who was sitting inside the car," the spokesman said.

None of the FSB officers were injured in the incident, he said.

Investigators are working at the site.

A source in law enforcement agencies, for his part, told Interfax that another gunman hiding inside the car managed to escape.

"The identity of the killed militant has not been established yet. The car exploded during the shootout," the source said.
