Problem of Russia-Japan peace treaty should be tackled calmly - State Duma speaker
MOSCOW. April 30 (Interfax) - Russian State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin has advised against excessively politicizing the topic of a possible peace treaty between Russia and Japan, calling for a calm approach to tackling this problem.
"If we want to resolve this problem, we should first of all break free from the stereotypes inherited after the Cold War and focus on scrupulous consistent work in a calm atmosphere without any excessive politicization and excessive public statements on this matter," Naryshkin said at a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the State Duma on Tuesday.
At the end of their meeting on Monday, the Japanese premier and Russian President Vladimir Putin adopted a joint statement, which addressed, among other issues, the topic of a possible peace treaty between the two countries.
Naryshkin said Moscow believes that this topic "has been excessively politicized in recent decades, which has certainly impacted the opinions of Russian and Japanese citizens."
