Russia, U.S. agree to encourage Syrian govt, opposition to negotiate - Lavrov

MOSCOW. May 8 (Interfax) - Russia and the U.S. have agreed to do all they can so that the Syrian government and the opposition sit at the negotiating table and find a political solution to the ongoing armed confrontation.

"We have confirmed our commitment to a negotiating solution," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference following negotiations with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry late on Tuesday.

"We take on the obligation to make the opposition and government sit at the negotiating table," he said.

"We have agreed that Russia and the U.S. will encourage both the Syrian government and the opposition groups to find a political solution," Lavrov added.

Moscow and Washington support Syria's sovereignty, he said.

Russia and the U.S. "take on the obligation to use the existing opportunities to make the opposition and the government sit at the negotiating table," he said.
