Lavrov, Egypt's Amr: Syria opposition should unify for talks with govt

MOSCOW. May 13 (Interfax) - The foreign ministers of Russia and Egypt, Sergei Lavrov and Mohamed Kamel Amr, have called for all Syrian opposition groups to form an alliance for talks with the government.

In a telephone call on Monday that "focused on the problem of settlement in Syria," Lavrov and Amr "pointed out the urgency of the task of putting an immediate end to bloodshed in that country and reaffirmed the need for the earliest possible negotiations between the government and opposition on the basis of the Action Group's Geneva communique of June 30, 2012," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"In this context, the importance was stressed of the consolidation of all opposition groups on the platform of readiness for dialogue with the government of the Syrian Arab Republic with the aim of finding compromise formulas for the peaceful resolution of the Syrian conflict in light of Russian-American agreement on the convocation of an international conference on Syria that followed negotiations between the minister of foreign affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov, and the U.S. secretary of state, John Kerry, in Moscow on May 7," the statement said.
