Three Georgian servicemen die, 27 wounded as base attacked in Afghanistan - minister

TBILISI. May 14 (Interfax) - Three Georgian servicemen were killed and 27 wounded in an attack on a military base in Afghanistan on Monday, Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said in an update on Tuesday.

"According to information from doctors, the lives of the wounded are not in danger," Alasania told briefing. He said 10 of them were back in the ranks. As for the rest, "I can't exclude the possibility that some of them will need treatment in Georgia or Germany," the minister said.

The minister said the bodies of the three Georgians who had died would be brought to Georgia soon.

"Each of these heroes will be awarded the medal of Vakhtang Gorgasali 1st Class, and Col. Koba Akhvlediani, who didn't have to be at the base at that moment but made a special contribution to rebuffing the terrorist attack, has been nominated for decoration with the medal of St. George," Alasania said.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan has incorporated a Georgian unit since August 2009. Since then 22 members of the Georgian contingent have died. The contingent is 1,500-strong today.
