CIS border department chiefs to discuss anti-terrorist fight, border security in Odesa
ODESA. May 16 (Interfax) - Border department heads of CIS member countries will discuss suppression of terrorism and illegal immigration and security of CIS borders at the 69th meeting of the Council of CIS Border Force Commanders.
"Ukraine's hosting of the 69th meeting of the Council is of paramount importance for the Ukrainian border department. We value the Council work towards coordinated efforts of CIS border agencies and deterrence of modern threats and challenges of terrorism and illegal immigration to national security along CIS borders," Ukrainian State Border Service Head Mykola Lytvyn told a Thursday press briefing in Odesa.
He explained the choice of Odesa as the meeting venue with the display of Ukrainian Border Service security techniques on land and sea borders.
In turn, Chairman of the Coordination Service of the Council of CIS Border Force Commanders Alexander Manilov said the meeting would discuss anti-drug measures and special border operations.
"The Council will ponder eleven major issues today related to operations of border departments and security along CIS borders and sign over 20 documents pertaining to border security. One of the topical questions is Central Asia and the situation taking shape because of the planned coalition withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014," Manilov said.
Ukraine is hosting the meeting of the coordination council for the fifth time. Eleven heads of CIS border departments and deputy heads of the CIS Executive Committee and the CIS Anti-Terrorist Center are taking part in it. Representatives of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine will attend, too.
The sides will familiarize themselves with engineering and information innovations the Ukrainian State Border Service is using in consistency with European border standards and the experience of Euro 2012 in Ukraine, Eurovision 2012 in Azerbaijan and the Seventh Winter Asian Games 2011 in Kazakhstan.
