Jagland hopes that Belarus will join European Convention on Human Rights
MOSCOW. May 22 (Interfax) - Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland said he is hoping that Belarus will soon join the European Convention on Human Rights.
Jagland said the countries of the EU are now in the process of joining the European Convention on Human Rights and they will then join the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union of the European Court of Human Rights. Jagland said that, when that happens, virtually all countries on the European continent, except for Belarus, plus the EU as a legal entity will be within one organization with uniform standards and conventions, adding that he is hoping that Belarus will join the Council of Europe, too.
Jagland also said Russia is also an important member of the Council of Europe.
