Lawyer to appeal 25-year sentence on ex-Kyrgyz president's son - court
BISHKEK. May 22 (Interfax) - The lawyer of Maxim Bakiyev, junior son of former Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, will appeal the court sentence for his client.
The lawyer lodged the appeal with the Bishkek City Court in mid-May, a source in the Kyrgyz Supreme Court told Interfax on Wednesday.
The Bishkek Pervomaisky District Court sentenced Maxim Bakiyev to 25 years in custody for economic and corruption crimes in public procurement inconsistent with republican interests.
The Supreme Court said that the Kyrgyz Justice Ministry assigned the lawyer to Maxim Bakiyev late last year after the defense of the ex-president's son failed to appear in court.
Maxim Bakiyev, who headed the Central Agency for Development, Investment and Innovations, moved to the UK after the change of administration in Kyrgyzstan in April 2010. The United Kingdom denied his extradition to the home country.
Maxim Bakiyev was accused of conspiring with TNK Dastan CEO Alexei Yeliseyev to misappropriate the controlling stake in the Shkval torpedo plant, which was supposed to be transferred to Russia in payment of the state debt.
