Russia, NATO should look for new forms of conventional arms control - Shoigu

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Russia and NATO should look for new forms of agreements on control over conventional weapons in Europe, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

"It is necessary to look jointly for new formulas to settle the problem of conventional weapons, with an equitable and respectful approach to national security interests of each European country," Shoigu said at an international conference on European security.

"The projects of NATO's further enlargement and the movement of the alliance's military infrastructure eastwards undermine the results that were achieved with so much effort," he said.

"Not everything is working out well with eliminating the North Atlantic alliance's superiority in terms of conventional weapons, which certainly damages Russia's interests," he said.

"The desire to tie control over these weapons to the settlement of conflicts and attempts to contain Russia led to the death of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe," Shoigu said.
