Shocks in Middle East increase risks outside it - Lavrov

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - The tensions in the Middle East and northern Africa will be long term and will most likely go beyond these regions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"It is obvious that the shocks that have gripped the Middle East and northern Africa will have long-term and painful effects and will most likely increase the risks far beyond this region," Lavrov told an international conference on European security.

Lavrov said joint challenges can only be met through collective actions based on the principles of international law.

"Supremacy of law in international relations is as important as in internal relations. When resolving crises, it is necessary to act in strict accordance with the UN Charter, avoiding arbitrary interpretation of Security Council resolutions and attempts to resolve problems using unilateral violent methods," Lavrov said.
