NATO, Russia should form legal obligations in security sphere - NATO assistant secretary general

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - The countries of NATO and Russia should work out common legally binding obligations in the sphere of security, NATO Assistant Secretary General Dirk Brengelmann told an international conference on European security held in Moscow on Thursday.

Brengelmann said Russia believes it is possible and desirable to sign a new treaty on European security.

Russia has participated in the creation of European security instruments since the end of the Cold War and the NATO countries now do not always reach a consensus on the matter, he said.

Brengelmann said he is personally convinced that members of the NATO-Russia Council have become more successful in political dialogue, adding that NATO-Russia relations are now at the highest point of their history.
