Almost 400 residents of Tula region apply for aid after storm

TULA. May 24 (Interfax) - Compensation payments are being made in the Tula region to victims of a storm in the town of Yefremov, where 385 people applied for aid, a spokesman for the regional emergencies department told Interfax on Friday.

Compensation payments had been made to 21 applicants by Friday morning.

Overall, 80 million rubles has been provided by the regional authorities to make compensation payments, each amounting to 25,000-100,000 rubles.

Tula Region Governor earlier said that 4,314 people were affected, including 3,864 residents of apartment buildings and 450 private house owners.

The damage is tentatively estimated at almost 150 million rubles.

Windows were blown out and roofs were damaged in 213 properties, including 179 residential buildings populated by 4,900 people, plus socially important facilities, including five schools and two childcare centers, as well as nine administrative buildings and 18 shopping centers. Fifty trees and 15 lamp posts fell and nine high-voltage power line towers were damaged.

Twenty-two people applied for medical attention, among them five children.

The government declared a state of emergency in the region.

The repair work is to be finished by May 26.
