Russian, Israeli prosecution services sign cooperation agreement

MOSCOW. May 28 (Interfax) - The Russian and Israeli prosecution services have agreed to cooperate in combating terrorism and corruption, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office and the State Prosecutor's Department under the Israeli Justice Ministry signed a cooperation agreement in Moscow on Tuesday. On the Russian part, the document was signed by Deputy Prosecutor General Alexander Zvyagintsev.

"The agreement envisions cooperation on relevant areas of activities of the Russian and Israeli prosecution bodies, such as protection of human rights and freedoms, combat against crime, including its organized forms, terrorism, corruption, human trafficking, and other crimes posing a special threat to society, as well as interaction in extradition and legal assistance on criminal matters," it said.

During the meeting, Zvyagintsev emphasized "the importance and relevance of the agreement for developing Russian-Israeli relations, because there has been no document until lately that would provide for direct contacts between the two countries' prosecution services."

On May 27-28, 2013, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office hosted a meeting of a task force comprised of high-ranking Russian and Israeli prosecution officials, who discussed extradition and the rendering of legal assistance on criminal matters, specifics and differences in national laws in these fields, and further steps toward development of interaction between the two.
