Killing of gay man in Kamchatka indicates that homophobic rhetoric is inadmissible - LGBT community leader

MOSCOW. June 3 (Interfax) - Nikolai Alekseyev, a leader of the Russian LGBT community, called on increasing the level of tolerance of gay people in Russian society after the killing of a gay man in Kamchatka.

"Society needs to be trained. Nothing will change if we don't create a normal information space. People will continue to be killed for their untraditional sexual orientation. There is a need for equal positions and unbiased moderators in the debate on this issue," Alekseyev told Interfax on Monday.

Alekseyev called on the authorities to stop using " homophobic rhetoric."

"Such rhetoric is inadmissible and it leads to tragic consequences. We still oppose the law ion the propaganda of homosexuality, which is being considered by the State Duma, and we plan to conduct another protest at the State Duma building," he said.

Gay activists also intend to raise the issue of the killings of gay activists at the gay pride parade they intend to conduct in ST. Petersburg.

According to earlier reports, a deputy director of the Kamchatka airport Ozyornoye was killed in late May. Investigators believe he could have been killed for his "untraditional sexual orientation."

A criminal case has been opened in Ust-Bolsheretsky district of the Kamchatka Territory against three men who are suspected of involvement in the crime.
