Moscow Duma may call early mayoral elections on Thursday - source

MOSCOW. June 4 (Interfax) - The Moscow City Duma may call early mayoral elections in Moscow at an extraordinary session on Thursday, and the elections themselves should take place on September 8, a city administration source told Interfax.

"The Moscow City Duma should call elections not later than 90 days before the voting day. If a decree endorsing incumbent Mayor Sergei Sobyanin's resignation is issued on Wednesday, the extraordinary session could be scheduled for Thursday," he said.

Regular Moscow Duma sessions address issues put on their agenda at least a week before, but extraordinary sessions could consider issues submitted only a day before, he said.

Sobyanin said earlier on Tuesday, after discussing the possibility of early mayoral elections with Moscow Public Chamber members, that he intended to run in early mayoral elections.

"I will ask the president in the near future to hold mayoral elections as early as this year," Sobyanin said.
