Sparking occurs between Okhotny Ryad-Lubyanka metro stations, no smoke - ministry

MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - There has been sparking on the Moscow Sokolnicheskaya metro line. There is no smoke, a representative of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax.

"There was some sparking but no smoke. Passengers will not be evacuated," the ministry said.

A police source said earlier that a short circuit in the tunnel between Okhotny Ryad and Lubyanka stations might have caused a new emission of smoke on the Sokolnicheskaya line.

He said rescuers were going back and into the tunnel to locate the short circuit.

Before that the metro press service reported a new case of smoke and terminated power supply to a contact rail. It said the smoke was seen in the same tunnel and the same place where the fire had started.

A policeman told Interfax "all the trains carrying passengers were stopped at the stations and there were no passengers inside the tunnels."

He also said evacuation had begun.

It was reported earlier that traffic between the Park Kultury and Komsomolskaya stations was halted at 8:17 a.m. on Wednesday after a power cable had caught fire in the tunnel between Okhotny Ryad and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina stations.
