Militant killed in Dagestan
ROSTOV-ON-DON/MAKHACHKALA. June 6 (Interfax) - A militant was killed in an exchange of fire with police in the Khasavyurt district of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus on Wednesday evening, a district police spokesman told Interfax on Thursday.
"The gun battle erupted in a forest near the Bairam train station at around 11:00 p.m. Moscow time. The militant put up armed resistance to law enforcement personnel and was killed in the shootout," the spokesman said.
In an interview with Interfax, a spokesman for the Dagestan branch of the Russian Investigative Committee identified "the suspect as Amirkhan Guseinov, born in 1984."
A source in law enforcement agencies told Interfax that the killed militant could be involved in an attack on policemen in the village of Novosasitli on Tuesday.
On June 4, police officers stopped a car outside Novosasitli for a security check, but its passengers and driver hastily got out of the car and fled to a nearby forest. Policemen came under fire as they chased these persons. No one was killed or injured in the attack. The area was sealed off.
A counterterrorist operation has been under way in the Khasavyurt district since May 21.
