Saakashvili asks NATO secretary general to help investigate attack against Georgian military in Afghanistan

TBILISI. June 8 (Interfax) - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has sent a letter to NATO Secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen asking NATO for assistance with the investigation into the terrorist attack committed in Afghanistan on Thursday, in which seven Georgian military men were killed and nine were wounded.

"On behalf of the people of Georgia, I thank you for your condolences and your good words in this big national grief," Saakashvili said in a letter posted on his official account on Facebook.

Saakashvili also thanked NATO for its support and assistance in the rescue of the people who were wounded in that attack and in their treatment. "This support convinced us that as many people as possible will be protected and more sons of Georgia will return to their homes and will be reunited with their families," Saakashvili said.

"You are right to say that Georgia has paid a certain price for supporting the ISAF million, but we deeply believe in the high role of this mission and that achieving stability and protection in Afghanistan is key to regional and global stability," Saakashvili said.

"We still loyal to the ISAF mission and we are hoping that NATO will help us with the investigation into the terrorist attack against our servicemen. We will also be thankful if NATO helps determine the origin of the two videos [posted on the Internet on behalf of the Taliban on June 6] in which the Taliban threaten to destroy Georgian units," Saakashvili said.
