OTH radar can reach Holland from Mordovia - developer
MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's new "Konteiner" over-the-horizon radars are capable of detecting and monitoring any aircraft within a range of 3,000 kilometers, said Sergei Saprykin, the general designer of the NPK NIIDAR long-range radio communications research and production center, which is part of the RTI high-technology industrial concern.
"It is a new generation OTH radar intended to monitor aircraft at a range of the first OTH leap of 3,000 kilometers. It can detect any aircraft, anything that moves, from the runway on," Saprykin told reporters.
It can also track small aircraft, he said. "As I sat at a reception facility in Mordovia I could watch Dutch pilots learning to steer small sport planes," Saprykin also said.
The Konteiner's signal rebounds from the ionosphere and travels beyond the horizon, all of which makes the radar irreplaceable if enemy aircraft are to be spotted.
"The signal goes up and recoils from the ionosphere producing an image of what is going on beyond the horizon. Since the signal is reflected once, makes one leap, we can get sufficiently accurate radar guidance," Saprykin said.
