Moscow: aim of Damascus bombings to thwart intl forum on Syria

MOSCOW. June 11 (Interfax) - Moscow claimed that twin bombings in Damascus on Tuesday that killed 14 people and left dozens injured aimed to prevent a planned international conference on Syria.

"It is obvious that those who are going out of their way to block attempts to achieve a political settlement of the crisis in Syria are behind this crime, especially at what is an important stage in organizing an international conference on Syria under a Russian-American agreement of May 7," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The dangerous attempts to prolong the armed confrontation in the country and turn the traditionally peaceful and tolerant Syria into an enclave of international terrorism and extremism must be brought to an end," she said.

"We again urge all our partners in the search for a politically negotiated solution for the Syrian crisis to resolutely condemn the criminal actions of terrorists and those who support and mastermind them," Zakharova said.

Tuesday's bombings on Marjeh Square in the city center were carried out by suicide attackers.
