Russia, U.S. to activate direct communication line to exchange info on computer threats - Putin-Obama statement

LOUGH ERNE, UK. June 17 (Interfax) - Russia and the United States will use a direct communication line between nuclear danger reduction centers to immediately exchange information on computer threats and reduce the risk of misunderstanding.

"In order to create a mechanism of information exchange to ensure more efficient protection of crucially important information systems we have organized a communication channel and agreed to exchange information between our groups of operative reaction to computer incidents," a joint statement of the Russian and U.S. president in the wake of their meeting on the sidelines of the G8 summit in Lough Erne reads.

"In order to assist an exchange in urgent messages that may reduce the risk of misunderstanding, escalation and conflict we ordered to use for these purposes a direct communication line between our nuclear danger reduction centers," it reads.

The two presidents also said that they ordered "to establish a direct line between high-level official for settling potentially dangerous situations caused by events that may create threats in the sphere of using information and communication technologies and information and communication technologies themselves."
