Russian embassy in Islamabad waiting for official confirmation of death of tourist

MOSCOW. June 23 (Interfax) - The Russian embassy in Pakistan has not given official confirmation of the death of a Russian tourist in north Kashmir by armed extremists.

"We are waiting for a call along the lines of the [Pakistani] Interior Ministry. Before that we cannot officially confirm anything," an embassy spokesman told Interfax on the phone on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the death of a tourist from Russia in a militant attack on a hotel in Kashmir has been confirmed by the Russian Federal Agency for Tourism (Rosturism).

"We are now waiting for the details from the Russian consulate in Pakistan but we already know that there was one Russian citizen among the killed," Rosturism press secretary Irina Shchegolkova has told Interfax.

"As the hotel was in the foothills, it is most likely that the foreigners staying there were mountain-climbers who had come for an ascent," she said.
