UNHCR should address Snowden case - Russian rights ombudsman
MOSCOW. July 2 (Interfax) - The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) should address the fate of former CIA employee and NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who is staying at the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, Russian Human Rights Commissioner Vladimir Lukin said.
"I believe two organizations should address his case, namely the airline that he used to come from Hong Kong and the United Nations Organization, particularly the high commissioner for refugees," Lukin told Interfax on Tuesday.
"Snowden is obviously a person inclined to flee his country and seek refuge somewhere else. He is in a transition zone. I would appeal to the UN high commissioner for refugees and ask him to take up this case and help in this," he said.
It is the UNHCR that deals with refugees and such people as Snowden, Lukin said. "As a UN member, Russia will provide some assistance to the UNHCR if it can," he said.
