Ruble strengthens markedly on Tuesday

MOSCOW. July 9 (Interfax) - The ruble posted substantial gains against the dollar and euro on the Moscow Exchange on Tuesday amid rising investor interest in emerging market currencies.

The dollar was down 18.25 kopecks to 33.041 rubles/$1 as of 7:00 p.m. on the Moscow Exchange and the euro was down 47 kopecks to 42.25 rubles/EUR1.

The bi-currency basket shed 31 kopecks to 37.185 rubles.

The Central Bank lowered its official dollar rate for Wednesday by 23.68 kopecks to 33.0862 rubles/$1, and lowered its euro rate by 9.53 kopecks to 42.6389 rubles/EUR1.

The dollar averaged down 27.73 kopecks to 33.0274 rubles/$1 in Today deals and down 27.77 kopecks to 33.0179 rubles/$1 in Tom deals. Overall trading volume was $6.974 billion, including $2.235 billion Today and $4.740 billion Tom.

The euro was down 19.12 kopecks to 42.565 rubles/EUR1 in Today deals and down 30.64 kopecks to 42.4595 rubles/EUR1 in Tom deals in volume of EUR603 million, including EUR362 million Today and EUR241 million Tom.

The MosPrime Rate for overnight credits ticked up 1 b.p. to 5.81%.
