Beirut terror attack must be investigated - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. July 10 (Interfax) - Moscow insists on a thorough investigation of the July 9 terror attack in Beirut, which hurt 53 people.

"The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the terror attack with the active backing of Russia and urged the Lebanese to preserve their unity against the backdrop of the attempts to undermine stability in the country. This crime must be investigated thoroughly, and the masterminds and perpetrators must stand trial," says a commentary of Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich released on Wednesday.

A car bomb went off in a Shiite suburb of Beirut on July 9, on the eve of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Fifty-three people were injured in the explosion, and twelve of them were hospitalized.

"We express our solidarity with the Lebanese administration and the friendly people of Lebanon who have faced another violent challenge from terrorists. We wish the soonest recovery to the wounded," Lukashevich said.

"We reaffirm our support to sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Lebanon, the civil peace and concord in that country based on a constructive dialogue between political forces and mutual respect of all ethnic and religious groups," the Russian diplomat stressed.
