Wildfires persist in Siberia

NOVOSIBIRSK. July 10 (Interfax) - Siberian wildfires grew from 86.8 to 110.6 hectares on Tuesday, the Siberian Federal District forestry department said.

As of Wednesday morning, ten fires were raging in the Krasnoyarsk territory over 89.9 hectares, one in the trans-Baikal territory over 0.7 hectares and one in the Irkutsk region over 20 hectares).

"Eight wildfires were confined to 108 hectares, in particular, in the trans-Baikal territory and the Irkutsk region," the report said.

Thirteen forest fires were put out on 72.4 hectares in the Republic of Buryatia, the Altai, trans-Baikal and Krasnoyarsk territories and the Irkutsk region over the past 24 hours.

Some 98 firefighters and smokejumpers, five fire trucks and four aircraft were assigned to put out the blaze.

"Thunderstorms were the main causes of the wildfires," the report said.
