Police chief in Pugachyov fired
PUGACHYOV. July 10 (Interfax) - Igor Lopatkin, police chief of Pugachyov district in the region of Saratov, has been dismissed, head of the regional police Sergei Arenin said.
He made the announcement at a meeting with the residents of Pugachyov at a local culture center, an Interfax correspondent reports from the scene.
Arenin named Colonel Andrei Ostapovich the new police chief in Pugachyov.
On July 6 a 20-year-old local resident and a 16-year-old native of Chechnya quarreled near the Golden Cask cafe in Pugachyov. The teenager stabbed the local man numerous times in the chest with a scalpel. Even though the victim was provided with medical assistance, he later died in the hospital. The murder sparked off a number of large-scale protests in the town.
