Snowden attempts to end his Sheremetyevo standoff - source
MOSCOW. July 12 (Interfax) - The upcoming meeting of former CIA agent Edward Snowden with Russian politicians, human rights defenders and lawyers aims to end the standoff, a source familiar with the situation told Interfax.
"The very idea of disclosing the position of the former security service officer stranded in the Sheremetyevo transit zone displays his intention to determine his future and end the standoff, which involves many parties, among them the United States and Russia," he said.
"The protracted silence of Snowden created an atmosphere of uncertainty about the development of this scenario," the source said.
"Snowden took an understandable break after Moscow had hinted at the highest level that he had to decide where he was to seek refuge and whose asylum offers to accept and on what conditions he could count on patronage from Russian authorities. It seems the break will end today," he said.
