Court bans protests in Chisinau during Romanian president's official visit

CHISINAU. July 16 (Interfax) - A court has banned the Patriots of Moldova party from holding a protest demonstration in the center of Chisinau on Wednesday against Romanian President Traian Basescu's official visit to Moldova this day.

The court of the Central Sector of Chisinau, where the city hall had filed a motion earlier, ruled that the Patriots of Moldova cannot hold their demonstration on Wednesday, July 17, an Interfax reported.

The court ruled that the party could freely hold this action on Thursday, when Basescu's visit to Moldova will be over.

In explaining its ruling, the court reasoned that, since Basescu's visit will be official, it must be provided with all the necessary security measures, which rules out protests.

The Patriots of Moldova planned to protest Basescu's visit to Chisinau as his arrival, as they reason, is planned for the day when Moldova was occupied by a Romanian army led by Marshal Ion Antonescu.

Apart from the Patriots of Moldova, the League of Russian Youth, the Social-Democratic Party, and the Party of Regions also planned to protest near the Victory Arch in the center of Chisinau.

Pro-Romanian organizations like, for instance, Actiunea'2012, on the contrary, welcomed the Romanian leader's visit and expect to meet with him.

Basescu is coming to Moldova for an official visit at the Moldovan president's invitation.
