Police confirm detention of two Navalny supporters in Kirov

KIROV. July 18 (Interfax) - Two persons were detained in Kirov for staging an illegal rally and procession in support of opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who was sentenced by a local court to five years in prison on Thursday for embezzling property owned by the state-owned timber company Kirovles, Kirov region police spokesman Sergei Barantsev told Interfax.

"They were taken to a police station, where protocols were drawn up against them for breaking the rules for arranging and holding rallies, pickets and processions," he said.

According to earlier reports, the suspected organizer of an unauthorized pro-Navalny procession had been detained in Kirov.

Moscow activist Nikolai Lyaskin and several other people were detained for holding an illegal procession in Kirov, an Interfax correspondent reported.

Lyaskin himself said that three supporters of Navalny had been detained.
