Enterovirus incidence among children more than doubles in 2013 - Onishchenko

MOSCOW. July 23 (Interfax) - The enterovirus disease incidence among Russian children more than doubled year-on-year, Russian consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor head and Russia's chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko said.

"We are concerned about the situation related to enterovirus infections. We registered 991 cases in six months," Onishchenko told reporters in Moscow on Tuesday.

According to Onishchenko, the incidence rate increased more than 220% in comparison with 2012.

Enterovirus infections are a group of acute diseases caused by enteroviruses with broad clinical manifestation - from slight fever to sever meningitis.

The most widespread route of infection is swimming in surface waters.

Aseptic viral meningitis is the most typical and severe form of the enterovirus infection.
