Australia again loses right to ship kangaroo meat to Russia
MOSCOW. July 25 (Interfax) - Australia has once again been deprived of the right to ship kangaroo meat to Russia.
Russia's Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight Service (Rosselkhoznadzor) has sent notification of the necessity of halting the certification of product from the enterprise Macro Investments PTY Ltd., which was Russia's sole supplier of kangaroo meat. It received the right to supply this product in November of last year.
Russia had a blanket ban on kangaroo meat from Australian companies in 2008 and 2009.
Rosselkhoznadzor's decision relative to the Australian supplier was prompted by the arrival in Primorye of a contaminated 18.6-tonne consignment of the meat accompanied by veterinary certification by the service's counterpart in Australia. Inspection revealed that the producer was not in fact Macro Investments PTY, but rather an enterprise prohibited from shipping to Russia.
Russia imports kangaroo meat in small quantities and mainly for restaurants.
