Eight killed, 11 injured in major road accident in Belarus

MINSK. July 28 (Interfax) - Eight people died and 11 more were injured in a Sunday road accident in Vitebsk region of Belarus, Interfax was told at the Vitebsk region police PR section.

"There was a headlong collision on Sunday of an Opel Omega with Russian license plates and a Mercedes Sprinter minibus with Ukrainian license plates on the 169th kilometer of M-8 highway near the village of Babinichi, Orsha district, on an even section of the road with good visibility in both directions," a press officer said.

The driver and all four passengers of the Opel Omega died at the scene. There were 14 people in the minibus three of whom died. Rescuers removed 11 survivors with the help of hydraulic rescue tools. All of them were taken to Orsha city hospital #1 with injuries, he said.

"The killed are being identified. The survivors from the minibus are residents of Odesa region. Experts from the psychological service of the Belarusian Emergency Situations' Ministry are counseling them. A team of investigators and operatives is working at the scene checking all the circumstances of the accident," the press officer said.
