Matveyevsky market was expected to be demolished by January 2015 before attack on policeman

MOSCOW. July 31 (Interfax) - The Matveyevsky market located in the Moscow Western Administrative District, where a policeman was badly beaten during the detention of a rape suspect on Saturday, is to be demolished by 2015, the prefecture of the district reported on its official portal on Wednesday.

"The Matveyevsky market and another four markets located on the territory of the district will be demolished by January 1, 2015," the portal quoted prefecture spokesperson Olga Veldina as saying.

Veldina said the closure of the market is unrelated to the incident.

"The market is being closed according to plan under a program to demolish open-air markets. The majority of the markets on the territory of the district have either closed or are being reorganized," Veldina said.

The only markets expected to stay on the territory of the Moscow Western Administrative District in 2015 are the Dorogomilovsky market and "a couple of other markets."
