Rosatom to boost investment in Novovoronezh-2 nuclear plant 60% in 2014

MOSCOW. Aug 2 (Interfax) - The Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation plans to boost investment in the Novovoronezh-2 nuclear power plant now under construction by 60% in 2014, according to a report from Atomenergoproyekt, the general designer and contractor for the plant.

A total of 20 billion rubles was invested in the project in 2012 and 28 billion rubles is earmarked for the current year, with investment rising to 46 billion rubles in 2014, Rosatom chief Sergei Kirienko is cited in the report as saying.

Rosatom and Atomenergoproyekt signed a state contract on construction of the first and second blocks of the Novovoronezh-2 in June 2007. The new station is being built at the site of the existing Novovoronezh nuclear power plant, whose third and fourth blocks (each with 440 megawatts of capacity) are scheduled to be decommissioned in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The two new blocks at Novovoronezh-2 (1,000 MW each) are scheduled to come on line in 2014 and 2015.

Novovoronezh, a subsidiary of Rosenergoatom, is located on the banks of the Don River 42 kilometers south of Voronezh. It was the first nuclear power plant in Russia to be equipped with VVER-type reactors. It currently has three blocks in operation. The first two (N1 and N2) were decommissioned in 1988 and 1990 respectively.
