German citizen fined in Kazakhstan for running illegal casino

KARAGANDA. Aug 6 (Interfax) - A court in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region has imposed a fine on a German citizen who was convicted of setting up an illegal casino.

An Interfax correspondent reported from the courtroom that the 37-year-old citizen of Germany would have to pay a fine equivalent to 500 Kazakhstan's monthly calculation indices.

The monthly calculation index (MCI) is an index used in Kazakhstan to calculate pensions, allowances and other social payments, as well as fines. One MCI stands at 1,731 tenge. Today's official exchange rate is 153.81 tenge/$1.

The foreigner was released from custody in the courtroom.

The German citizen was detained by Kazakh police in March after illegal gambling operations were uncovered on the premises of a former restaurant in the center of Karaganda.
