Ex-head of Kazakh statistics agency appeals against her extradition from Russia

ASTANA. Aug 6 (Interfax) - Former director of Kazakhstan's State Statistics Agency Anar Meshimbayeva will stay in Russia for the time being.

"As far as I know, she has appealed against the decision approving her extradition. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has already ruled in favor of extraditing her. She has appealed against this decision. The court will hold a hearing, and if it upholds her extradition, she will be sent back home," Kazakh Prosecutor General's Office spokesman Nurdaulet Suindikov said at a press briefing in Astana on Tuesday.

Meshimbayeva was detained in Moscow in February 2013. The former official, her deputies Nurman Bayanov and Birlik Mendybayev, as well as KIIK firm founder Serik Turzhanov are suspected of misappropriating budget funds during the nationwide census in Kazakhstan in February-March 2009. The woman was declared internationally wanted in November 2009.

Meshimbayeva fled abroad, and the Kazakh authorities sought her extradition from the United Arab Emirates in vain.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office ruled in favor of turning Meshimbayeva over to Kazakh law enforcement services in early July.
