Russia records first natural population increase of 2013 in June - ministry

MOSCOW. Aug 7 (Interfax) - The first natural increase (7,000) in Russia's population of this year was recorded in June, the Labor and Social Protection Ministry said.

"The population had its first natural increase of this year in June by almost 7,000 people," the ministry press service quoted Minister Maxim Topolin as saying.

Some 149,800 babies were born in Russia this June, "which was 3,600 children less than in June 2012," the press service reported.

According to Topilin, there was a natural increase in population in the North Caucasus, Urals, Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts. The latter reported a change of trend from a natural population decline to the natural population increase.

The country had the lowest monthly death rate for the past nine years in the same month, the ministry said.

"There were 142,800 deaths in June 2013, which was 10,500 people or 6.9% less than in June 2012. That was the lowest monthly indicator since 2004," it said.
