Collective effort is crucial to Palestinian-Israeli peace process - Russian foreign minister

WASHINGTON. Aug 9 (Interfax) - Finding a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will require a collective effort even amid Washington's recent successes in this issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Russian reporters after a meeting with UN Secretary of State Ban Ki-moon.

"We discussed Syria, the Middle East peace process and the UN's role, which should become more relevant today because we cannot do without a collective effort even if your position welcomes the U.S. efforts," he said.

The meeting also addressed the Iranian nuclear program, the situation in Afghanistan and the role the UN will play in the country after the International Security Assistance Force leaves it in 2014, the Russian minister said.

"We expressed our concrete concern over the current developments in Egypt and the influence this situation may have on the entire region given Egypt's role in the Middle East and North African regions, the Arab League and the African Union," Lavrov said, welcoming the atmosphere at his meeting with the UN secretary general.
