Suspected killer of Belarus election commission member taken into custody at hospital
MINSK. Aug 13 (Interfax) - The man accused of murdering Belarusian Central Election Commission member Svetlana Khinevich has been taken into custody.
"The suspect in the murder of Svetlana Khinevich was taken into custody at the hospital where he is currently being treated. He will remain under police guard. No charges have been filed against him yet," Minsk Investigative Committee spokesman Alexander Gerasimov told Interfax on Tuesday.
The suspect will soon undergo a psychological and psychiatric evaluation, he said. The man was admitted to the hospital after he tried to commit suicide.
"The suspect was found in his apartment unconscious and with multiple knife wounds. He lost a lot of blood and was hospitalized. The nature of his injuries allowed us to conclude that he attempted to commit suicide," Gerasimov said.
"After the suspect regained consciousness on August 9, investigative procedures permitted by the law were launched in the presence of his lawyer. Investigators questioned him for the first time," he said.
The suspect and Khinevich lived in the same apartment building in Minsk.
The man suffers from drug abuse, investigators said.
The dead body of Khinevich bearing multiple stab wounds was found in her apartment in Minsk on August 4. Investigators said that the murder was not related to her work.
