Police accompanied by witnesses, lawyers enter apartment where unlawful campaign materials reportedly stored
MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Police accompanied by specially assigned witnesses and lawyers have entered an apartment where, as one of the candidates in the Moscow mayoral elections claimed, unlawful campaign materials could be stored, the Moscow police department told Interfax.
"As part of a rescue operation, Emergency Situations Ministry officers accompanied by policemen, witnesses and lawyers have broken open the door to an apartment in a house on Chistoprudny Boulevard in order to find out the cause of a smoke and, if need be, provide assistance to those affected," it said.
A team of investigators also entered the apartment accompanied by witnesses and lawyers. "Police officers are questioning the people in the apartment," a police spokesperson said.
Emergency Situations Ministry earlier opened the apartment at 10 Chistoprudny Boulevard in Moscow using an electric saw.
The Moscow police department told Interfax earlier that police had started an inquiry into a claim by one of the contenders in the Moscow mayoral elections that unlawful campaign literature had been stored in the apartment.
"A man introducing himself as an aide to one of the Moscow mayoral candidates called the Basmanny district police department to report that illegal campaign materials had been stored in an apartment on Chistoprudny Boulevard," it said.
