KHABAROVSK. Aug 15 (Interfax) - Floodwaters have come close to seven villages in the Arkhara district of the Amur region following discharges from the Bureya hydropower plant's dam reservoir. The villagers have been evacuated.
"The waters have reached the villages of Kasatkino, Innokentyevka, Sagibovo, Novopokrovka, Zhuravlevka, Severnoye and Ukrainka. A total of 224 people, mostly women, children and elderly citizens, have been evacuated," the regional government reported on Thursday.
The evacuees were accommodated in a shelter in the town of Arkhara and given hot food.
Rescuers are working in the flooded villages. A helicopter is on standby in the flood zone to assist people in distress.
Floodwaters currently threaten 15 more towns with a total population of 1,000, Arkhara district administration head Eduard Misyuk said.
There are no dangerous refuse dumps or animal burial sites in the municipal district, the report said.
