Up to 4,800 specialists working in flood-stricken Khabarovsk Territory

KHABAROVSK. Aug 20 (Interfax) - As many as 4,800 specialists are currently working in the Khabarovsk Territory in Russia's Far East to tackle the aftermath of floods and assist the local population, Khabarovsk Territory Acting Governor Vyacheslav Shport said.

"This group includes rescuers, firefighters and civil defense specialists. They are equipped with more than 1,000 units of hardware," Shport said at a press conference in Khabarovsk on Tuesday.

This presence of specialists and equipment is sufficient to successfully conduct clean-up operations in the region, he said.

Evacuation efforts are taking place according to plan, he added.

"More than 400 people have already been evacuated. People see that predictions have become a reality and realize the gravity of the situation," the acting governor said.

The water level in local rivers is measured in the morning and in the evening, he said.

"Apart from that, the water level is also measured during the day in order to allow the emergency response center to effectively coordinate specialists' work in the evening," Shport said.
