Moscow condemns Monday attack on Egyptian servicemen

MOSCOW. Aug 20 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has described the deadly Monday attack on the Sinai Peninsula during which 24 Egyptian military servicemen were killed and three others wounded as provocative.

"Moscow strongly condemns this terrorist attack and expresses its sincere condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the dead Egyptian servicemen. The aggressive nature of this action, which was committed during a complicated transitional period in Egypt is obvious," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement available on its website on Tuesday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its earlier recommendation to Russians vacationing in Egypt not to leave guarded territories of the resort areas.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry information, a group of radical Islamists attacked buses transporting Egyptian servicemen and policemen near the town of Rafah on August 19. "Information coming from Egypt suggests that 24 military servicemen were killed and three others injured," it said.
