Ukrainian Energoatom bought nuclear fuel $171 mln from Russian TVEL in H1
KYIV. Aug 21 (Interfax) - Ukrainian atomic energy corporation Energoatom (Kyiv) purchased fresh nuclear fuel worth $170.967 million in the first half of 2013, the State Statistics Service said.
All of the purchases were from Russian nuclear fuel supplier TVEL.
Energoatom purchased fresh nuclear fuel worth $300.329 million in the first half of 2012, including $255.350 million from TVEL and $44.979 million from Westinghouse.
There were no purchases from Westinghouse in the latest period because of defects in some of the fuel assemblies delivered last year that were installed at the South Ukraine nuclear plant, while no such shortcomings were detected in the TBC-W fuel elements supplied by TVEL.
As a result, Westinghouse must to rework its design for the fuel assemblies before making further deliveries to Energoatom.
Energoatom purchased nuclear fuel from TVEL worth $555.355 million in 2012 (and $451.29 million in 2011) and from Westinghouse worth $44.979 million ($145.836 million).
Westinghouse's share in the deliveries declined to 7.5% in 2012 from 24.4% in 2011, while TVEL's share rose to 92.5% from 75.6% respectively.
Energoatom is the operator for all four of Ukraine's active nuclear power plants, consisting of 15 nuclear power blocks with capacity to generate 13,835 megawatts of electricity.
