Georgian justice minister denies chief prosecutor's resignation
TBILISI. Aug 23 (Interfax) - Georgian Justice Minister Teya Tsulukiani has denied a Friday report by the non-governmental organization Free Zone that Chief Prosecutor Archil Kbilashvili had resigned after clearing this step with Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.
"This is absurd information. Chief Prosecutor Archil Kbilashvili is in his job, and he is not planning to step down. Next week he will go on leave for one week, and this has been agreed upon at the governmental level," she said.
The Chief Prosecutor's Office has been criticized in the past several weeks, including by government officials. In particular, criticism followed after a court acquitted a number of former high-ranking officials of office crimes.
In particular, the Tbilisi City Court in early August cleared former Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaya of one of the three counts the prosecutors had charged him with.
