Turkmenistan to hold international tender for data channels

ASHGABAT. Aug 26 (Interfax) - Turkmenistan's Communications Ministry plans to call an international tender to lease data channels with capacity of 620 Mbps (STM-4), Deputy Prime Minister Akmyrat Yegeleyev, who is in charge of transportation and communications, said at a government meeting broadcasted on local television.

He said the decision to hold a tender was made because of the growth in the number of Internet users in the country amid reforms being carried out in the telecommunications sector. The country is now implementing a presidential social and economic development program for 2012-2016 and a transportation and communications development program for 2012-2016.

"Work in this direction must be conducted with the view to the future, on the basis of the active implementation in practice of modern technologies and innovative developments," President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow said at the meeting.

The president gave Yegeleyev a number of orders, including in regard to the further development of high-speed Internet services in the country.
