16 militants killed in N. Caucasus in a week

PYATIGORSK. August 27 (Interfax) - Law enforcement officer killed 16 militants, including Bammatkhan Sheikhov, the leader of the Buinaksk terrorist group, in Russia's North Caucasian republics on August 17-23, the press service of the Interior Minsitry in the North Caucasian Federal District reported.

Three accessories to militants were detained in Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria and Ingushetia, the press service said.

A total of 44 militants have surrendered since the January 1, 2013, it said.

Nine caches were arms were found. Three flamethrowers, eight grenade launchers, three machineguns, 22 handguns, 30 grenades, 52 projectiles for grenade launchers, two air bombs, and eight improvised explosive devices were seized.

"The operative situation in the North Caucasian Federal District was characterized by offensive actions of law enforcement officers; however, the level of terrorist threat is still high in the federal district," the press service said.
